It looks perfect. Crystal clear, blue-tinted water, no visible algae, nothing floating on the surface. You dip a hand in and it feels fine. So you let the kids jump in, invite friends over for the afternoon, and enjoy what appears to be a flawlessly maintained pool.
What you can’t see is what matters most — and in Atlanta’s summer heat, what you can’t see can make your pool unsafe, damage your equipment, and cost you significantly more than a properly maintained pool would have.

Why Atlanta Summers Create a Chemistry Challenge Unlike Any Other Season
Pool chemistry is not static. It responds continuously to the environment — and Atlanta’s June through August conditions are particularly demanding. Understanding why summer changes the equation helps explain why pools that are chemically stable in March can go wrong fast by the Fourth of July.
- Heat and chemical consumption: As water temperature rises, chlorine degrades significantly faster. The same amount of chlorine that lasts three or four days in a 65-degree pool may be depleted within 24 hours when temperatures climb above 85 degrees. Atlanta regularly sees multiple consecutive days above 90°F — conditions where chlorine demand surges and homeowners maintaining their own pools frequently fall behind without knowing it.
- UV degradation: Direct sunlight is one of chlorine’s most efficient destroyers. Without a stabilizer (cyanuric acid) at the correct concentration, outdoor pool chlorine can be almost entirely consumed by sun exposure within a few hours of application. And here’s the hidden problem: if your stabilizer concentration is too high — a common overcorrection — it begins to lock chlorine in a bound form that’s ineffective against bacteria and algae even though your test strip shows a chlorine reading.
- Bather load: Summer means more swimmers, more often. Every person who enters the pool introduces body oils, sunscreen, sweat, and organic compounds that consume chlorine and create combined chloramines — the chemical compound responsible for the burning eyes and strong “chlorine smell” that people mistakenly associate with a clean pool. A properly balanced pool with free chlorine has almost no detectable odor. That pungent smell is the chemistry going wrong, not going right.
- Rain events: Atlanta’s summer thunderstorm pattern means pools regularly receive significant rainfall that dilutes chemicals, shifts pH, and introduces nitrogen and organic material from runoff. A substantial rainstorm can meaningfully alter pool chemistry overnight and should always be followed by a water evaluation.
The Five Summer Mistakes That Cause the Most Problems
Relying on test strips alone. Consumer test strips have their place, but they’re a rough approximation, not a diagnostic tool. They struggle to accurately read combined chloramines, they can give false readings when water is warm or the strip has been exposed to humidity, and they don’t measure total dissolved solids or provide the nuanced reading of cyanuric acid concentration that a proper water analysis delivers. For Atlanta pools in summer, a professional water test that accounts for the full chemistry picture is worth doing at the start of the season and whenever something seems off.
- “Shocking” without balancing pH first. Pool shock — typically calcium hypochlorite or a potassium monopersulfate product — is a useful tool. But adding shock to a pool with pH above 7.8 dramatically reduces its effectiveness. Chlorine becomes progressively less active as pH rises; at pH 8.0, only about 20% of your chlorine is in its active disinfecting form. Homeowners who shock a pool with elevated pH and then wonder why the algae isn’t clearing are fighting chemistry they didn’t account for.
- Inconsistent or “catch-up” dosing. Adding large quantities of chemicals after the fact — when water has already turned hazy or green is starting to appear at the walls — is harder on equipment, harder on swimmers, and simply less effective than maintaining consistent levels throughout the week. Summer requires more frequent attention than spring, not the same schedule applied to a more demanding environment.
- Neglecting circulation time. Pool chemistry depends on chemicals being distributed evenly throughout the water. In the peak heat months, running your pump for fewer hours to save on electricity is a false economy. Inadequate circulation creates dead zones where algae can establish, chemicals pool unevenly, and debris settles rather than getting filtered out. A properly sized variable-speed pump running the right number of hours is more efficient than an undersized schedule.
- Ignoring calcium hardness. Calcium hardness is one of the least-discussed pool chemistry parameters among homeowners and one of the more consequential. Water that’s too soft (low calcium) becomes corrosive and will pull calcium from your pool’s plaster, grout, and equipment. Water that’s too hard creates scale buildup on surfaces and inside heaters and filters. Both conditions accelerate equipment wear and increase long-term maintenance costs.
